The routine we know of is the groom sees the bride only after she walks down the aisle. Times are changing and more brides and grooms are choosing to sneak a peek of one another for their “first look” wedding pictures.

First look photos involve you and your betrothed (as well as your photographer) venturing off privately for first chance to see each other prior to the ceremony. While it’s becoming more of a trend, it’s entirely up to you and your fiancé whether or not to take first look wedding photos. But how do you know if a first look is right for you?

Take the first look if:

• You are experiencing anxiety about having all eyes on you as you walk down the aisle

The first look and pre-ceremony photo shoot can help calm those wedding-day jitters.

• You want some alone time with your beloved before the festivities begin

Even though the wedding is all about the two of you, you really don’t get many opportunities for alone time on your wedding day. By taking a first look, you allow for quality time ahead of time.

• You love surprises

Yes, your fiancé will wait with anticipation at the altar (as will all of your guests), but typically photographers arrange first look sessions for the biggest surprise impact so that you know the first look is coming, but you’re not sure when or how. (Usually the bride surprises the groom)

• You want to spend more time with your guests 

A first look means that your wedding portraits can be done before the ceremony instead of before the reception, and you have more time for photography. Keep in mind that choosing this route makes for an earlier start to all the rest of your appointments that day.

Skip the private first look if:

• You’re superstitious

Many consider it bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her dress or on the wedding day. Even if you’re the slightest bit superstitious, you don’t want to walk into your wedding with your fear of superstitions coming true hanging over your well-coiffed head.

• You’re a traditionalist

If you’ve always cherished the idea of having your groom see you in your dress for the first time as you walk down the aisle and you can’t picture it any other way, then don’t! Have it the way you dreamed it.

• You want that private time together after the ceremony

It’s exciting and relaxing to take a deep breath together and revel in the very first moments of your marriage and allow the photographer captures that once-in-a-lifetime feeling.

• You want to keep your dress in tip-top shape

When you schedule a first look photo session, you must acknowledge that you’ll be in your dress for longer (and possibly wear it outdoors), which means you increase the chance of exposing your gown to the elements. By skipping the first look, you don’t have to fret as much about messing up your dress, hair, etc. before the wedding even begins.

Whatever your choice, you’ll still have a “first look” whether it’s before the ceremony or when the doors open for your grand entrance, and it’s always a special moment when you and yours see each other for the first time.
